Maharashtra is the state famous for its huge forts and many of these forts were closely related to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. One of such fort is Panhalagad or Panhala fort. It is a fort placed on Sahyadri Mountain ranges at the altitude of 840 meters.

The fort was constructed between 1178 CE and 1209 CE. The fort came under the administration of Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1660 CE. Some of constructions of the fort were added by Ibrahim Adil Shah. Later it was taken by British raj.

The important features of the fort are its three massive gates named as Teen Darwaza, Char Darwaza and Wagh Darwaza. Some part of the fort is in ruins now. The parts with are remained in good condition are Andhar Bavadi, Ambarkhana, Sajja Kothi , Dharma kothi and Kalavanticha mahal. There are temples dedicated to Someshwar, Ambabai, Mahakali and Sambhaji II.

Panhala attracts many tourists round the year, people come here to see fort and get glimpse of Maratha history and enjoy the beauty of Sahyadri hills. The serene view from these mountains of Panhala is very spectacular. It is favorite spot for Trekkers also.

Panhala has a cool climate of hill stations; one can come here round the year. But during monsoons season there will be heavy rain. It will not be safe to trek during rainy season because the path will be slippery. For accommodation you may prefer Panhala or nearby city Kolhapur. In close proximity of Panhala other tourist places are Kolhapur, Narasobachi wadi and Jyotiba. Sangli and Miraj are close by big cities.
