Among all the forts of Maharashtra Raigad has special status because it was awarded as capital of Maratha Empire by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The district in which this fort is situated is named after the same as “Raigad District”. The earlier name of the fort is Rairi, Shivaji Maharaj renamed it as Raigad. The fort is strategically placed on Sahyadri Mountains at an altitude of 820 meters.

Raigad fort or Raigad killa is located in Mahad of Raigad district, Maharashtra. It is 130 kilometers away from Pune. To reach the top of his hill fort on need to climb steps. Raigad was under rule of Raje Chandraraoji More and it was captured by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1656 CE. He reconstructed the fort added few buildings to it with the help of Architect Hiroji Indurkar . At that time it was known as Rairi, He made it as capital and renamed as Raigad. After the era of Shivaji the possession over Raigad was shifted to Moghuals and to Marathas again in 1707CE. In 1818 CE the fort was captured and Destroyed by British East India Company. The wooden construction was fully destructed, toady most part of the fort is in to ruins.

The main entrance is known as Maha Darwaja. The other places to visit are Palki Darwaja, Mena Darwaja, Statue of Shivaji Maharaj, Samadhi of Shivaji Mahraj and his mother Rajmata Jeejabai, Jagadishwar temple, Shirkai Devi Temple, Hatti talav and Takmak tok point.

Climate of Raigad is moderate so it can be visited round the year but winter is more comfortable. Food stalls are available at base of the hill. MTDC resort is also there on Raigad, you can make your stay there.
